Australia is one of the safest countries in which to have an anaesthetic. Anaesthetists are highly trained medical specialists and experts in perioperative medicine, intensive and emergency care and resuscitation. However, all anaesthetics and procedures are associated with some risk. The risk of complications increases with age, body habitus (obesity), complexity of the surgery and presence and severity of pre-existing medical conditions.
Common side effects can occur which include: nausea, vomiting, sore throat, bruising and pain at the IV site, muscle aches, headache and dizziness. Rarer complications include: heart and lung problems , allergic reactions and oral damage (lips, tongue, gums and/or teeth). Life threatening problems are fortunately very rare.
For 24 hours after general anaesthesia or IV sedation – it is not advised that you drive a motor vehicle (you may not be covered by insurance),
operate heavy machinery or electrical equipment, drink alcohol or sign any important legal documentation.
